SiPass® integrated secures Athens' modern-day Acropolis
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a complex in the bay of Phaliron in Athens which includes new facilities for the National Library of Greece and the National Opera. The Center was designed by architect Renzo Piano was built by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The €566 million project was completed end of 2016 and will be donated to the Greek state during 2017.
Plans for a big scale donation by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation started in 1998. Initially the foundation planned to make separate donations to the National Library and the National Opera. In 2006 it was decided to build one complex for both organizations and after discussions with the Greek state the area of the former horse racing track was chosen. In 2008 the foundation chose Italian architect Renzo Piano to design the complex and in 2012 construction works started.
Renzo Piano, famous for buildings like the Centre George Pompidou in Paris and The Shard in London, envisioned an artificial hill that offers breathtaking views over the sea on one side, and the city on the other side, with the Acropolis looming on the horizon. By covering the new buildings with a green roof, the architect creates an extensive park that is badly needed in a densely-built city like Athens. During his visit to Athens, Greece (November 15–16 2016), the US President Barack Obama gave a speech at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, covering the impact of democracy.
The Perfect Fit
In this project, SiPass® integrated (a product made by Siemens AG) was a perfect fit regarding reliability and functionalities. Sipass is used as a Security Management System (SMS) since guards and operators can easily perform access control functions along with the embedded intrusion functionality and video IP cameras; used for verification and alarming.
The chosen architecture is IP at the door level meaning that each door is controlled by AC5200, ADE5300 or ADD5100. Mifare Facility Smart Card Encoding (DesFire) of cards is used, and the readers are set up to read specific sector blocks, thus increasing the security level.
SiPass is used to integrate intrusion peripherals like PIRs and panic buttons to create intrusion alarm zones that can be armed from the GUI of the client’s PC. An attempt to cross an armed zone or a pressed panic button gives an alarm to the user. The alarm is also shown in the Sipass Graphics client PC.
The graphics module is used to show all relevant peripherals (also cameras) on the maps so that the user is notified when there is an alarm. All the hardwired inputs are monitored via resistors, and the inputs/outputs are used to drive with full functionality the BKS motorized door locks. The need for controlling elevator banks is fulfilled via AFOs providing the functionality for six elevators on the premise.
Moreover, Sipass is used to transfer alarms via MK8000 OPC to a third party BMS system (TCP/IP level integration).
